In light of recent wildfires in Los Angeles and San Diego County’s history with these disasters, we have two experts available to discuss the impacts and recovery efforts. Laura Deitrick, director of The Nonprofit Institute at USD, can speak to how nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in assisting communities during natural disasters, offering guidance on where wildfire victims can turn for support. Claudia Avila, assistant professor of environmental and ocean sciences, co-authored a recent study on soil chemical changes during and after wildfires. Her research highlights the unexpected toxins released by wildfires and emphasizes the need for improved monitoring techniques, which could significantly enhance post-fire recovery strategies

Mental Wellness Awareness Month: USD’s Tele-Mental Health Training Clinic to Provide Free Mental Health Services to Military-Connected Community

USD’s Tele-Mental Health Training Clinic recently received a $2.5 million grant to provide free telemental health services to military personnel, veterans and their families. This initiative aims to address the growing mental health needs within the military-connected community. It will allow the clinic to expand its reach and provide free mental health support to more than 100 military-connected community members throughout California starting in early 2025. Nick Boyd, PhD, assistant professor and principal investigator for the grant, can talk about this grant and the importance of expanding mental health options for our military community.
