New Housing Solution Tackles California’s Shortage with Innovative, Fire Resistant Design
|
Amid San Diego's housing crisis, Daniel López-Pérez, a founding faculty member of USD's Architecture Program and its current director, has developed the Polyhaus— a cost-effective and scalable rapid-housing model using cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT is sustainable and climate resilient since it offers the same rigidity and fire resistance as reinforced concrete, while weighing a fraction. The polyhedron design, ranging in sizes from 540 to 2,500 square feet, reduces construction costs and can be built in a matter of days. López-Pérez is available to discuss the design and its benefits, as well as offer a tour of the first Polyhaus, which he built in his backyard. *English and Spanish interviews available
