USD Alum and NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim Heading to Space

This week, NASA and its partners will discuss the upcoming Expedition 73 mission aboard the International Space Station during a news conference. Among those heading to space is NASA astronaut and USD alum Jonny Kim, who is scheduled to launch to the space station on the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft no earlier than April 8. Kim is one of two NASA astronauts from USD. Diane Hoffoss, professor of mathematics, was one of Kim's professors when he attended USD. She is available to talk about having Kim as a student and share how exciting it is to see him go to space.

USD Hosts Energy Academy for Local Leaders to Learn About the Region's Energy Landscape

USD's Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) and the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative (SDRCC) recently developed the San Diego Regional Energy Academy with a goal of helping community leaders understand San Diego's energy/power systems, and ultimately make more informed decisions in their government/nonprofit roles. The second cohort of the academy will begin their three-day training on March 12. Darbi Berry, director of Climate and Environmental Programs at the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative at the University of San Diego and Scott Anders, director of the Energy Policy Initiatives Center, can discuss the program.

USD Program for Lifelong Learners 55+ Years Old Begins March 10

USD's University of the Third Age program (U3A) is a three-week program, held twice a year, that invites adults 55+ years and older to attend lessons online -- covering everything from legal topics to history. The next cohort begins on March 10 with classes featuring topics like "In search of new medicines from plants," "Identity theft 101," and "Your next great read." Nicole Matthews, Program Director of University of Third Age (U3A), can discuss the program, what attendees can expect and how this program has been educating life-long learners for five decades.

How Traveling the World Influences a Chemistry Professor's Science

 

This week, "At the Edge of It All" was joined by James Bolender, associate provost of international affairs and a professor of chemistry at the University of San Diego. He talked about his early love of science and how that led to opportunities to travel the globe while using his chemistry expertise. He oversees USD's International Center, and explained how traveling abroad can be an enriching learning experience for students, exposing them to new cultures and ideas. Bolender also discussed innovative work he and his students are doing using coffee bean husks to create water filtration systems in Uganda. Listen to the podcast here.
