USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

July 22, 2025

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Comic-Con Returns to San Diego

This weekend, the eyes of popular culture shift to San Diego as Comic-Con kicks off downtown. Two USD faculty members can provide some insight into the Comic-Con phenomenon. Bradley Bond and Eric Pierson are both professors of communication. Bond specializes in parasocial relationships, and can talk about our connection to superheroes and other characters in pop culture. Pierson is an expert in film studies and can discuss why, with the state of the film industry, Comic-Con plays such a key role in a movie’s success, sometimes generating excitement for something we won’t see in theaters for years.

Shark Expert On Myths, State of Sharks

This week is Shark Week, and we just observed World Shark Day, an event aimed at dispelling myths about sharks and raising awareness about conservation. Daniel Cartamil is an adjunct assistant professor of environmental and ocean sciences at USD and specializes in the study of sharks and marine life. With sharks on top of mind, and as more San Diegans hit the beach this summer, he’s available to talk about shark populations off our coast, some of the misconceptions people have about the animals and why it’s important to support conservation efforts.

Microsoft SharePoint Hack

Over the weekend it was discovered that hackers had staged cyberattacks on Microsoft’s SharePoint platform, a cloud software that many organizations use to share files. Now, the FBI is among those investigating. Nikolas Behar is an adjunct professor of cybersecurity. He can explain how hackers may have gained access to the platform and how wide-ranging the effects of a cyberattack of this scale could be.

In this episode of "At the Edge of It All", we talk with Meredith Levin, director of the Women's Legal Clinic at USD's School of Law. She explains the vital work of the Women’s Legal Clinic, which offers free legal services for issues like divorce, custody and domestic violence. The need is growing, and for many, this support can be life-changing. She also discusses the risks of going to court without an attorney and how the clinic gives students hands-on experience while serving the community. Listen here.
