DEF CON Is Back: Ethical Hacker Reveals What Really Happens Behind the Screens

DEF CON, one of the world’s most important hacker conventions, is back in Las Vegas from August 7-10. It's where hackers, feds, coders and cyber pros converge to explore everything from AI jailbreaks to breaking into smart fridges. Cybersecurity professor and ethical hacker Nikolas Behar will be there and is available for interviews. He can decode what actually goes down at the convention, what “ethical hacking” means and share real-world tips on protecting your data. *Interviews available in English and Spanish

Summer is the peak season for butterflies to reemerge in our backyards, including the bright orange monarch butterfly, which begins to migrate and breed. The monarch butterfly population has been in decline over the last few years and organizations like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working to get the butterfly on the Endangered Species Act Protection list. Geoffrey Morse, associate professor of biology, conducts research on insects. He can share insights on the current state of butterfly populations and how we can all play a role in protecting them.

San Diego Book Festival Returning to USD

August 23, USD is partnering with KPBS for the San Diego Book Festival. The free event will bring major national and local authors to USD’s campus for a day of panels and a celebration of reading. Dean of USD’s College of Arts and Sciences, Noelle Norton, along with professors and authors Alejandro Meter, Amanda Petersen and Brian Clack, are available for interviews. They can talk about what to expect at the festival, and why it’s important to get people of all ages engaged with reading. At the Edge of It All Podcast: The Benefits of a Bilingual Education

Erika Garcia, assistant professor on early childhood biliteracy, joined the "At the Edge of it All" podcast to discuss her own experiences as a bilingual student and how that instilled in her a passion to advocate for bilingual education programs. Garcia also shared how her research is working to demystify the ways in which a bilingual education impacts young learners and who benefits from being bilingual.
