Back-to-School Tips for a Smooth Start to the School Year

San Diego Unified students headed back to class this week and the transition can be tough for some. Erika Garcia, assistant professor in the Department of Learning and Teaching, is available to share simple, practical tips to help students and parents get into a rhythm and stay on track during the school year. She can also speak to how families can support students’ emotional well-being and learning as they adjust to new classrooms and schedules. *Interviews available in English and Spanish

New Student Ambassador Program Will Connect Students with Wellness Resources
|
Just before USD’s new Palomar Health Student Wellness Center opened in April, seven Student Wellness Ambassadors were selected to create the first cohort of leaders who will be tasked with connecting fellow students with wellness offerings on campus. As the fall semester begins in a few weeks, and in honor of National Wellness Month, the Ambassadors will reconvene to let the campus community know about the wellness resources on campus. Kaleena Jezycki, a nursing graduate student and Student Wellness Ambassador, is available to discuss what the program will mean on campus and how she’s able to connect her nursing experience with this program.

San Diego Book Festival Returning to USD

August 23, USD is partnering with KPBS for the San Diego Book Festival. The free event will bring major national and local authors to USD’s campus for a day of panels and a celebration of reading. Dean of USD’s College of Arts and Sciences, Noelle Norton, along with professors and authors Alejandro Meter, Amanda Petersen and Brian Clack, are available for interviews. They can talk about what to expect at the festival, and why it’s important to get people of all ages engaged with reading. At the Edge of It All Podcast: How a Navy Veteran Works to Improve Access for Other Vets and More

Sheree Scott has devoted her life to helping the most vulnerable. This week on “At the Edge of It All”, Scott, the Director for Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Programs at USD, talked about what led her to healthcare. Following a career as a Navy corpsman, Scott got into academia, where she uses her knowledge and influence to help groups who are often overlooked by health care providers. She explained how she’s working to improve access and treatment for women and veterans, among others. You can listen to the episode here.
