USD School of Law and The Innocence Center Announce Partnership and Host a Panel Featuring Amanda Knox
|
On Wrongful Conviction Day (October 2) from 9:30-11 a.m., the USD School of Law and The Innocence Center in San Diego will announce a new partnership that will allow USD law students to work alongside the team at The Innocence Center on wrongful conviction cases. This partnership will launch the USD School of Law’s 13th legal clinic which offers free legal services to the community while providing practical legal skills to students. Following the announcement, there will be a panel discussion focused on false confessions, featuring Justin Brooks, USD law professor and founder of the California Innocence Project; Amanda Knox, exoneree and Innocence Center Board Member; and David Thompson, president of Wicklander-Zulawski, a leading authority on interrogation practices. The panel will be moderated by Michael Semanchik, executive director of The Innocence Center. Please RSVP if you are interested in attending.

Producing Ethical AI Tools for the Disability Community
|
A team of University of San Diego faculty has secured a grant to explore how AI can better serve individuals with disabilities. They will work to develop guidelines and best practices for tech startups and policymakers to follow when creating AI tools for the disability community. Darby Vickers, assistant professor of philosophy, is available to talk about the research they will be doing and why it is vital to be building AI tools meant to serve all users.

USD Co-Hosts a Multi-Sensory Experience
|
The University of San Diego, alongside Gifted Back and other community partners, will host a unique, multi-sensory experience called “In the Dark” on Saturday, October 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will dine while blindfolded, exploring their meals along with art and storytelling without their sight. The event’s goal is to raise awareness about and promote inclusivity for the blind and low-vision community. For the past seven years, USD engineering students and members of the local blind and low-vision community have been in collaboration to teach students about the importance of developing engineering designs with an equity-centered lens. USD Hosts Filipino American History Month Event with San Diego Judge
|
This week, USD's Copley Library will celebrate Filipino American History Month. Wednesday, Judge Rohanee Zapanta, a double USD alumna and Filipina American jurist, will speak. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
