USD News Connect: Connecting Expert Voices to the Stories Impacting Our Community

December 2, 2025

Good morning newsrooms!

Here's your USD News Connect — where each week the University of San Diego media relations team offers expert voices to speak on stories impacting our community. If you're interested in the stories below, or need experts for any other topic you might be working on, don't hesitate to reach out to us at press@sandiego.edu.*

Strategies for Small Businesses in a Shifting Economy

In the San Diego region, small businesses represent 98% of all firms and support roughly 60% of total employment. The Ahlers Center for International Business at USD’s Knauss School of Business is hosting an event on Friday, December 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., geared toward local small businesses. During the seminar, attendees will learn how small businesses can best navigate tariffs, global challenges, and local market shifts in today’s uncertain economic environment. Please RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you would like to attend or set up an interview with an expert to preview these topics ahead of the event.

Fowler Business Concept Challenge Grand Finale

On Friday, December 5, at 4 p.m., 16 teams from across campus will take the stage to pitch new business concepts to a live audience of local investors, industry leaders, students and alumni for the chance to win scholarships. Ideas range from an AI-powered VR/AR platform that transforms career exploration into an immersive, story-driven experience to the world’s first biodegradable, plastic-free hair ties made from discarded pineapple leaves. Please RSVP to press@sandiego.edu if you would like to attend.

Behind the Number: How USD Ranks #2 in the Country for Study Abroad Participation

The recent Open Doors Report, which looks at the number of students who study abroad each year, ranked the University of San Diego #2 for student participation with nearly 90% of USD's students studying in another country. USD has 45 different city offerings for students to study around the world, with its own center in Madrid. What makes the program successful and unique: students can participate in research, internships, community service learning, practicums and student teaching and there is a second-year experience program abroad in Florence or Auckland that was created to build community for second year students, as a part of a larger retention model.

Holiday Hoops

San Diego’s holiday basketball weekend is back — it’s Holiday Hoops, presented by USD Athletics and the Genuine Car Club. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams hit the court in back-to-back weekend non-conference games on December 13 and 14. This year’s celebration combines basketball, vintage cars, holiday fun and community giving.

USD Athletics and Genuine Car Club are partnering on a Toy Drive benefiting the Lemon Grove Early Childhood Education Center. Bring a new, unwrapped toy and get in for free (General Admission only).
