Newly Released Housing Affordability Index Reveals the True Cost of Homeownership
|
The Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate at USD has launched a quarterly Housing Affordability Index that reflects the true cost of homeownership, not just mortgage payments. Unlike the popular REALTOR index, this model incorporates insurance, taxes, utilities, maintenance and other essential expenses, measured against renter incomes, offering a more comprehensive snapshot of housing affordability trends. The index was developed by Norm Miller, Professor Emeritus at USD, along with Ian Kennedy and it covers 385 U.S. metro markets. Miller is available to discuss the housing landscape and how this tool identifies the minimum incomes that can provide a realistic path to homeownership in metros nationwide.
