What an exciting spring it’s been so far for USD Athletics with the opening of the Reggie Smith Softball Complex and the hiring of Blanche Alverson as the new head coach of USD Women’s Basketball. It was a distinct honor for me to introduce Reggie during our ribbon cutting ceremony on March 27. A long time Linda Vista resident and a cherished friend and advisor to the university, Reggie was among the first people I met when I became a part of the Torero family in 2015. She wholeheartedly embodies USD’s mission, vision and values, as well as the Torero spirit that powers our student-athletes during competition, in the classroom and in the community.
Coach Alverson is a welcomed addition to our campus, and another individual who believes strongly in educating the whole person. She is committed to the growth of our student-athletes intellectually, physically, spiritually, emotionally, socially and culturally. We are so fortunate to have her leading our women’s basketball program moving forward, and excited for that first tipoff later this year.
Peace, Jim

Such a pleasure commemorating the opening day of the new Reggie Smith Softball Complex with Reggie herself. It’s an honor to name this facility after someone who is a shining example of a Changemaker and leader in our community.
Grateful to everyone who made this new space possible for our women’s softball team and for their support of Torero Athletics. #GoToreros #universityofsandiego 🥎
