I hope your spring semester is off to a wonderful start. It has been a busy couple of months on campus. Prior to the new year, we dedicated Angels Unawares, a bronze sculpture by Timothy Schmalz. Coinciding with International Migrants Day, the new campus artwork offers a permanent example of USD’s Catholic mission and enduring commitment to human dignity.
At the beginning of January, USD became one of 237 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the prestigious 2026 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation recognizing exceptional commitment to community engagement. This marks our third time earning this distinction, having been part of the inaugural cohort in 2006. The American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation also announced that USD will serve as the administrative and operational host for the CE Classification for the next two cycles (2029 and 2032). I'm especially proud to share that we are the first Catholic institution to achieve this honor, a testament to our mission of confronting humanity's challenges by fostering peace, working for justice, and leading with love.
Finally, as we continue our 'Year of Wellness,' we offer a comprehensive, ongoing program focused on holistic health and community building. Please take advantage of these resources and opportunities for connection. Thank you for all you do to strengthen our community.
Peace,
Jim

We are grateful that San Diego Bishop Michael M. Pham and artist Timothy Schmalz could join us on campus to bless and dedicate the new “Angels Unawares” sculpture in front of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. After seeing this striking piece at the Vatican, which was originally commissioned by the late Pope Francis, we are honored to have a replica at USD funded through the generosity of anonymous donors.
The sculpture is a beautiful representation of our Catholic mission, vision and values and our commitment to human dignity, depicting migrants from different cultures and time periods, standing shoulder to shoulder on a boat. It also embodies who we have always been – a university community committed to inclusive excellence, confronting humanity’s urgent challenges by serving others.
